What to Write in a Wedding Card

Prepping to attend a wedding entails a lot of prep! You have to pick out the perfect outfit, maybe you have to line up a date, and of course there’s finding the perfect gift and card to go with it. Finding the right card to express your excitement and love for the happy couple can take time. Do you go funny? Friendly? Emotional? Then, you have to figure out the perfect thing to say. As small as that task may seem, it can be daunting to many, especially if words aren’t your thing. So, if you find yourself wondering what to write in your wedding card, you’re not alone!

As for the card itself, wedding cards don’t have to just be traditional greeting cards anymore. Now they can be gift tags attached to your present, handmade cards and even digital cards or notes that are printed and shipped to the couple with their gift. Of course, traditional cards are still just as wonderful as ever too. Couples today consider all of these as wedding cards, so don’t feel pressured to give them more than one.

First off, we all know weddings have a ton of etiquette involved. Thankfully, when it comes to wedding cards there are no strict rules! As long as you send it in a timely manner and it’s sincere you can’t go wrong! We’re here to help you come up with the perfect way to congratulate the newlyweds!

Before you write your message, consider these things:

How well do you know the couple?

How well you know the couple will help determine what and how much you write. If you’re really close to the newlyweds, your message can be deeper and more personal. On the other hand, acquaintances, family friends and extended/distant family should opt for a quick congratulations instead.

Are you going to the wedding?

If you are not able to attend the wedding, don’t feel like you have to explain your absence. Instead, take that time to share that you wish you could be there to celebrate them. Be sure to say “thank you” for the invitation even if you aren’t able to attend.

Is the couple religious?

If the couple is especially religious, a spiritual verse or scripture can be an incredibly thoughtful and easy gesture. However, it probably wouldn’t be best to include religious wording if the couple is of a different faith or if you know nothing about their beliefs.

Did you already send a note with your online gift purchase?

If you’ve already sent the couple a note wishing them the best through an online registry you’re good to skip an additional card. Most couples appreciate the sweet message with their gift and also appreciate not having to be handed lots of cards during their reception. This way they’re less likely to lose them and can keep their hands free for hugs and drinks! Of course, if you feel better still giving them a tangible note, grab one and drop it off at their gift table!
